Inductive Reasoning

Where deduction guarantees its conclusion, induction only makes it likely. It moves from particular cases to a general rule: the sun has risen every day so far, so it will rise tomorrow; every raven observed has been black, so ravens are black. The support can be strong, but it's always defeasible — one white raven overturns it.[1] Induction is the engine of everyday learning and of science, which generalizes from experiments to laws. Its weakness is also its use: because the conclusion outruns the evidence, induction can discover genuinely new things that deduction, which only unpacks what's already in the premises, never could.
