Ecology

Ecology studies how living things interact — with each other and with their physical surroundings — across scales from a single population to the whole biosphere. Predators and prey, competition for food, climate, and disease all set the terms of survival. Those terms are exactly the pressures that natural selection acts through: a trait is "good" only relative to an environment, so as the ecology changes, what evolution favours changes with it.
